Episode 40: Will we be outsourced or automated out of existence?
In this episode Terence and Philip discuss the outsourcing of editing jobs, remote (a.k.a cloud) editing and automation in production. What’s happening now and how will it evolve in the near future. Philip also sneaks in a preview of an interesting show he’ll be involved with in 2012.

Interesting show. Sounds similar to when Hollywood moved to Italy in the 1960′s to save money and make Spaghetti Westerns. The other night I watched an old Vincent Price movie on TNC, “The Last Man on Earth,” (1964) that was shot in Italy.
Terence, In discussing outsourcing with Philip I noticed that you went from broadcast to wedding videographers. Just a gentle reminder that in between is a wide range of corporate, educational, and industrial markets. I’ve made a reasonable living as an editor, producer, and videographer since the 1980′s in that arena. It’s not hard to imagine outsourcing in those markets. I imagine it will be most likely in post as you can’t shoot a tour of a corporate facility or interview the college president overseas.

Hi Lee,
You’re right there are a ton of folks doing video professionally in between, it would take a long time to list them all so I just tend to say from broadcast to weddings videos to quickly cover the gamut.
As for home videos, have you seen this? http://www.magisto.com/ Automatic editing. And it doesn’t require the metadata that Philip’s app does. Of course it isn’t as good an end product as Philip’s app, but it is a form of outsourcing.
